Jess Fell is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics from The University of Sydney. She is the current VFL/AFLW Sports Dietitian at the Western Bulldogs AFL Club, bringing extensive experience in elite and semi-professional sports nutrition, as well as chronic disease management.
Jess is passionate about sports dietetics and helping athletes of all levels perform at their best. She has worked with professional teams, including the GWS Giants and Cronulla Sharks during her studies, as well as semi-professional soccer clubs, marathon runners, trampoline athletes, representative teenage athletes, and weekend warriors of all ages in private practice in Sydney. She believes that nutrition is not a one-size-fits-all approach and works closely with each individual to tailor her advice to their unique needs, goals, and lifestyle.
Jess has a strong belief that food is fuel, and plays a crucial role in optimising performance, recovery, and overall well-being. By tailoring nutrition strategies to each athlete’s unique needs, she ensures they are adequately fuelled to train, compete, and recover at their peak.
Beyond performance nutrition, Jess has a strong background in chronic disease management, weight management, and general healthy eating, Jess provides evidence-based nutritional care and education to a wide range of individuals. She takes great pride in building genuine relationships and strong rapport with her clients, ensuring they feel supported and empowered to make sustainable changes to their nutrition.
Outside of work, Jess loves all things sport—playing netball, watching AFL games, going to the gym, and enjoying long walks with a coffee in hand.
WHAT IS A DIETITIAN?
Dietitians are University trained Nutrition specialists who are clinically trained in providing counselling to individuals and groups on dietary education and healthy eating lifestyles.
An accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) will be registered and comply with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) to deliver best practice guidelines in nutrition management.
An Accredited Sports Dietitian of the Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA) body will have met the specific requirements stipulated by this specialist organisation to practice Sports Nutrition.
Dietitians (APDs) differ from Nutritionists (ANs) in that they are trained and qualified to advise patients on the specific nutrition management of chronic health conditions. They translate scientific information into individualised, evidence-based practical advice to assist patients to manage their condition. Nutritional management should be reviewed by an APD periodically.
The overall aim is to improve patient outcomes through medical nutrition therapy (MNT)
WHAT IS A SPORTS DIETITIAN?
The main objective of a Sports Dietitian is to identify the best eating and drinking strategies to fuel and meet an individual’s nutritional schedule and training/competition requirements. These strategies should always be tailored to each person’s unique lifestyle choices and circumstances to ensure their performance and day to day well-being needs are optimised.
Overall, a Sports Dietitian aims to maximise an athlete’s performance, whatever level of sport they participate in. To achieve this ultimate goal, the Dietitian can aide with:
- General health and immunity
Maximising energy levels
- Concentration
- Support growth and body composition
- Recovery
- Hydration goals and strategies
WHAT SERVICES CAN A DIETITIAN PROVIDE?
Individuals or groups can benefit through counselling, group workshops, tours or lectures. These are the main areas that can be covered from the first consultation up until the end of their care continuum.
