What is it?

A quadriceps strain is an injury to one or more muscles at the front of your thigh. These muscles help straighten your knee and control movement during walking, running, jumping, and kicking. A strain occurs when the muscle is overstretched or torn, often during sudden or forceful movements.

What causes it?

Quadriceps strains commonly happen during activities that involve:

  • Sprinting or sudden acceleration
  • Kicking
  • Jumping or rapid direction changes
  • Heavy or poorly controlled gym exercises

They can also occur when muscles are fatigued, tight, or not properly warmed up.

How it feels

  • Sudden sharp pain in the front of the thigh
  • Muscle tightness or cramping
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Weakness when straightening the knee
  • Pain with walking, stairs, running, or kicking

Severity can range from mild discomfort to significant pain and loss of strength.

How physiotherapy helps

Physiotherapy is important for proper healing and safe return to activity. Your physio will:

  • Assess the severity of the strain
  • Guide early pain-free movement
  • Use manual therapy if needed to reduce muscle tightness
  • Progress you through strengthening and flexibility exercises
  • Gradually re-introduce functional and sport-specific movements
  • Help reduce the risk of re-injury with education and load management

Recovery

Most mild to moderate quadriceps strains recover well with physiotherapy over a few weeks, while more severe strains may take longer. A gradual return to activity is essential.
